Small Thing, BIG Impact

Have you ever thought about the smaller things in life? Think broadly. Think about anything. Next, think about the impact those small things have in relation to something that’s bigger. Here are a few examples to illustrate.

  1. The keys on a laptop – What if one of the keys were missing?
  2. The zero and comma used in the calculation of money – A wrong mistake could result in $1,000 being $10,000
  3. The bulbs in the headlight of a car – What happens if they don’t work?
  4. The latch that locks a window – What happens if it’s missing?
  5. The page in a book – What if one page were ripped out?

We hope you get the picture and better understand. In the examples above, if these smaller things do not work in the way they were purposed and designed, they pose a potential threat to the bigger thing to which they are attached to.

The Bible also gives us numerous examples of how a small thing can have a big impact when it talks about our tongues. Below are just a couple of scriptures out of many and so we encourage you to explore further. But for the purposes of our blog, we think this two help drive our point.

James 3:5  In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. *link is NIV

Proverbs 18:21 The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences. *link is NIV

We ought not to dismiss or ignore things in life just because they are smaller in size and scope. The words we speak; the deeds we perform; the time we give; the amount of money we tithe; how we express our love and concern for others and; the effort we put into our relationships. All these things can potentially have a huge impact on or change the outcome to something bigger. That outcome can be positive or negative but nonetheless transformative. So we encourage you to reflect and ask yourselves:

“How wary am I when it comes to the small things?”

“How much caution do I exercise when doing the small things?”

“What impact do my actions/behaviors have on the bigger things?”
